Hourglass Luminous Light Ambient Lighting Powder

Hourglass Luminous Light Ambient Lighting Powder is described as a “champagne pearl.” It’s a light peach with a white shimmer but really goes on mostly colorless on the skin. This shade is designed to “create a soft, incandescent candlelight glow.” It seemed just slightly brightening but added a fine sheen all-over the skin. When blended, I did not see any shimmer particles actually on the skin, though swatched heavily on the arm or hand will show some–but these seem to really blend and sheer out. The effect is, indeed, luminous. I would describe it as a step above glowy or a sheen, because I think the effect is a bit more obvious as a result of the sheen of the powder overall.

The texture of Hourglass’ Ambient Lighting Powders is incredibly finely-milled; so soft that there is a tendency for excess powder to kick up and around the product. I did not experience powderiness on the skin, but it was enough excess to see it disperse in the air and get all over the compact. Though, on the plus side, I think that powderiness will work well for those with oily skin types, as it will help to mattify a bit during application. Luminous Light seemed to yield a rather luminous sheen, not so over-the-top that it acts like a traditional highlighter but not quite as subtle as other finishing powders. It may be touted as a finishing powder, but it worked well to set my makeup, too, and helped prolong the wear of my foundation by an hour or so.

Chanel Mouche de Beaute Illuminating Powder

Chanel Mouche de Beaute Illuminating Powder is described as an “elegant gold shade enhanced with pink highlights.” It’s a warm-toned, golden champagne with champagne sparkle; there’s a faint hint of pink that I spotted at a glance at the product in the pan, but against my warm complexion, I couldn’t see any effect from the coloring. Bobbi Brown 24 Karat is very similar in color and has a metallic sheen, too, just less sparkle. NARS Satellite of Love has a darker, tanner base color. bareMinerals Secret Radiance is a bit darker when swatched heavly, but on the skin, it really looks rather similar applied.

It had a much more sparkly finish than I expected based on the description and even from just looking at the texture of the product, which came off as very metallic but not that it would have larger sparkle in it. The texture is soft, almost cream-like, because it’s a very smooth, dense product. Applied, it does yield a rather metallic sheen wherever it’s applied, even if it’s really worked into the skin. The sparkles are somewhat there, but some get lost in the brush and blended away. It somewhat emphasizes the skin’s natural texture along with pores; not the most emphasis I’ve come across but enough that’s noticeable. I put this on straight away this morning, and it started to get a little patchy after seven hours of wear but there was still some left after eight hours.

I kind of wish Chanel hadn’t ran a free two-day shipping promo (because it’s what made me cave and hold out hope I could receive and turnaround a review before it sold out), because for $80, it was disappointing to see emphasis of pores/skin texture. Brands like Chanel are famous for beautiful powders that reflect light in spectacular ways without emphasizing pores, so Mouche de Beaute was most definitely a miss.

MAC Shell Pearl Beauty Powder

MAC Shell Pearl Beauty Powder is described as a “pale peach with gold pearl.” It’s a soft pink-tinged peach with a golden shimmer-sheen. MAC Legendary is darker, pinker. MAC Born to Love is quite a bit darker, less peach. Guerlain Peach Boy is a touch darker and more shimmery. Benefit Sugarbomb is pinker, but I would say this is the closest when applied.

The first time I remember seeing it was with Liberty of London. MAC describes this Beauty Powder “as a highlight, soft blush, or overall finish.” It also has a snake skin pattern embossed across the top. Some of it should remain intact after a few uses, but within a dozen or so uses, I think the majority will be softened or flattened, but there’s no overlay masking the real color of the product. The cardboard box also has the collection’s promotional design printed on a cardboard sleeve, but the compact itself is standard MAC packaging.

Shell Pearl has true-to-pan color payoff, which is, overall, on the lighter side, and it has a pale base, so I expect it will be most appropriate for light to light-medium complexions, with it possibly turning ashy on some darker skin tones. I’m around NC25/NC30, and it worked as a subtle blusher and highlighter. The texture was soft, finely-milled, and applied smoothly–but there was some excess powder that kicked up when I was applying it (I used MAC’s 116 brush). It wore well for seven hours, and after eight full hours, there was noticeable fading.

THE GLOSSOVER

I would recommend this for lighter skin tones, as it may turn ashy on deeper skin tones. There is some powderiness in the texture, and I think this contributed to the slight fading I encountered after eight hours.
