Top 10 of 2013: Best Lipglosses

When it comes to lipgloss, I personally fall in love with two types:  insanely pigmented, nearly opaque colors or glimmering, dazzling, sparkling, and shimmering ones–but they have to be loaded with sparkle (and yet, they can’t feel gritty!).  Over the years, while stickiness isn’t a deal-breaker, I don’t like heavy, thick, goopy kind of glosses.  Reflecting on glosses I’ve tested out this past year, here were the ones I picked for my top ten!

  • Urban Decay Scandal Super Saturated High Gloss Lip Color — part gloss, part lipstick, this was one of the most stunning shades of red I’ve worn–so beautiful on (you can get it individually from UD’s website only)
  • Burberry Pink Sweet Pea Lip Glow — cool-toned, fuchsia pink with iridescent micro-shimmer and nearly opaque color coverage
  • Chanel Reflexion (71) Rouge Allure Extrait de Gloss — a medium, pink-coral with warm undertones and soft pink and copper shimmer
  • Sephora Red Glow Metallic Glow Lustrous Lip Shine — a vibrant, metallic pinky-red
  • YSL Orange de Chine (8) Rouge Pur Couture Glossy Stain — a vibrant, red-orange with a glossy shine
  • OCC Androgyne Lip Tar Stained Gloss — a tangerine orange with a light glossy shine
  • Burberry Cameo Pink Lip Glow — a warm pink with peach and copper shimmer
  • Giorgio Armani #519 Flash Lip Lacquer — a warm-toned, medium-dark pink with a creamy, glossy finish
  • YSL Fuchsia Fugitive (109) Rouge Pur Couture Glossy Stain — a molten gold-shimmered pink coral
  • Giorgio Armani #701 Flash Lip Lacquer — this shade is just too cool not to love (particularly for layering)

Guerlain Browny Clap (402) Gloss d’Enfer Maxi Shine
Guerlain Browny Clap (402) Gloss d’Enfer Maxi Shine ($30.00 for 0.25 fl. oz.) is a medium brown with very fine white shimmer and subtle warm undertones. Urban Decay Glindais similar–slightly more metallic. Bobbi Brown Bronzed Heather is darker, more mauve. Revlon Rosegold is more mauve. Dior Intimate Bronze has gold shimmer.
It has semi-opaque color coverage–there’s translucency that allows the natural lip color to come through–but enough color that it hides the majority of my lip freckle. The consistency is thin, non-sticky, and lightweight; it hardly feels like you’re wearing much at all. Browny Clap wears three and a half hours on me, which is shy of my four-hour average. This shade has more of a pearly finish, so it’s not as sparkly/shimmery as Cherry Swing, and it isn’t quite as shiny. The formula is hydrating and always leaves my lips feeling better than they did when I initially applied the gloss.

THE GLOSSOVER

Browny Clap is a very wearable color and will work well on a variety of complexions. I wish it wore a little longer and had a touch more shine.

Maybelline Shocking Coral ColorSensational Vivids Lip Color Review, Photos, Swatches

Maybelline Shocking Coral ColorSensational Vivids Lip Color Review, Photos, Swatches

Maybelline Shocking Coral ColorSensational Vivids Lip Color
Maybelline Shocking Coral ColorSensational Vivids Lip Color  is a bold coral-red with a luminous finish and warm undertones. Laura Mericer Hydrangea is lighter. Maybelline Vivid Rose is redder, darker. MAC Impassioned is pinker, less red-toned.MAC Party Parrot is a bit brighter and more intense, but it has more of a matte finish, too.Make Up For Ever #37 is warmer, less red.
It is rich in color with very nearly opaque color coverage (the way it lies on lips gives it a subtle translucency that keeps the color from looking heavy on the lips).  There’s a slight glossiness to the color because of its lightweight, creamy consistency that has some slip to it.  It glides evenly over the lips without pulling or dragging.  Shocking Coral wore for six hours, and it did leave behind a soft stain for another hour or so.  The lipstick was comfortable to wear, and it was lightly moisturizing when I wore it.

THE GLOSSOVER

If you've ever bemoaned a lack of pigment in drugstore lipstick formulas, then you have to check out Maybelline's Vivids range, because lacking in pigment they are not--nearly full color coverage and long, comfortable wear!

Laura Mercier Arabesque Creme Smooth Lip Color Review, Photos, Swatches

Laura Mercier Arabesque Creme Smooth Lip Color Review, Photos, Swatches

Laura Mercier Arabesque Creme Smooth Lip ColorShare on PinterestShare on Facebook Share on Twitter
Laura Mercier Arabesque Creme Smooth Lip Color
Laura Mercier Arabesque Creme Smooth Lip Color is described as a “baby pink.” It’s a soft peachy-pink with warm undertones and a natural, creamy finish with some shine. MAC To the Future is more subdued, less warm-toned. MAC Pure Zen is a touch pinker. Bobbi Brown Miami Coral is pinker and darker.
The Creme Smooth Lip Color formula is supposed to have “medium to full coverage with a semi-lustrous finish,” wear for six to eight hours, glide without skipping, and hydrate lips while it’s being worn. Now, that’s a rather tall order! Arabesque didn’t nail all of those on the head, unfortunately, though I still remain hopeful on other shades, because most of its problems are ones I see often in lighter, creamier shades like this one.
The texture is medium in weight and very creamy; it definitely glides on and doesn’t drag across the lips. It deposits mostly even color coverage, but the lighter shade made lines of lip color show up if you pressed your lips together. The color settled a bit after initial application, and as it wore away, more seemed to gather there. It wore for four hours, which is average for lipsticks on me in general, and slightly above average for colors like this. The color coverage was mostly opaque, though, and it did have a noticeable sheen to its finish, and this is where the lipstick did the best.  It was lightly hydrating while I wore it.  Bonus: it is one of the larger high-end lipsticks on the market.

THE GLOSSOVER

It's a decent lipstick, but the formula has a lot of claims behind it, and Arabesque just didn't live up to a lot of them, particularly in wear.
